STATE OF THE BUILDING REPORT FROM CLEMENTE SOTO VELEZ EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JAN HANVIK
December 8 , 2008
Hello residents, tenants, and friends of CSV,
The New York City Design Commission in its official Meeting Record for November 17, 2008 recorded cryptically – but importantly – that all plans for restoration of the building envelope of the Clemente Soto Vėlez Cultural & Educational Center, 107 Suffolk Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, were approved. CSV was in good company, with the East Harlem Health Center, installation of Swing Low by Alison Saar at Harriet Tubman Plaza, Engine Company 160 and Rescue Company 5 on Staten Island, the 40th Police Precinct in the Bronx, the Kensington Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the Catherine Street Family Residence, Kings County Criminal Courthouse, and conservation of Shadows and Flags (1977) by Louise Nevelson, Louise Nevelson Plaza.
What does that mean practically for CSV? According to Noah Kaufman, Project Manager for the CSV renovation at the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), in a December 2 email:
“DDC and SSX (SuperStructures, the City-approved and designated architects for the renovation) have been hard at work ensuring the "conformance" of the construction drawings and the specifications. We are adding the "Addendums" [sic] to the documents.
We anticipate our legal department's review, and our Bid Package review to be complete at the end of January. Then the Package is transmitted to our Agency Chief Contracting Officer - the ACCO - to advertise and conduct the competitive bid process.
If the Bid Opening is April 15, our current target DDC and various City agencies can vet the apparent low bidder and recommend the registration of the contract. The Comptroller has 30 days to review the request for registration. If all goes well, the Construction Kick Off will be Early July 2009 with work to proceed for at least one year.
If you have important daytime dates that would prohibit or require modification of a standard construction schedule in this period (July 2009 - July 2010) what we call "black out" days, please let me know. As you know, once the schedule is accepted and approved, any changes have cost implications.”
Please watch www.csvcenter.net for further updates. Adelante CSV!
